I was thinking of recommending The Black Prism of the Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks (The fourth book is coming out in October). It's a fantasy series, certain people are able to harness light and make things out of it- called luxin. Different colors from the light make luxin of different properties (like blue luxin is hard and strong, good for weapons. Green is sort of rubbery). The Prism (Who is able to draft any color into luxin, and split light making him more powerful than most who can only split one or a few colors) is a sort of religious leader who rules most of the world- which is still recovering from the war between himself and his brother to become the Prism. The characters are interesting and the various plots keep the pages turning. But the first book is 640 pages long, and the following books are even longer. Such big books might be a little intimidating...
